Becker College

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Becker College is a college in Massachusetts with campuses in Worcester and Leicester.

[edit] History

The historic Leicester campus began as Leicester Academy in 1784 - the 19th oldest campus in the country and claims a charter signed by John Hancock. The Worcester campus was founded in 1887 by E.C.A. Becker. In 1974, then Becker Junior College and Leicester Junior College began working together to expand academic offerings and provide broader social and recreational opportunities for their students. As a result of their close cooperation, the two were formally consolidated in 1977 as Becker College. Since that time Becker, a private, non-profit, undergraduate college has consistently increased its reputation as an educational leader in the central Massachusetts area.

Today, Becker offers primarily bachelor degree programs as well as a handful of associate degree programs. Areas of study include nursing, veterinary science, criminal justice, game design, education and various business and management disciplines. Academic formats include traditional arrangements, online learning and accelerated options for non-traditional students. In addition to academic study, students participate in NCAA Division III athletics as well as a wide array of campus-based social activities. Becker students have varied on-campus living options from traditional dormitory rooms, to historic home residence halls to apartment-style suites. The college's student body has grown to a full-time enrollment of nearly 1,400 along with over 20,000 active alumni.

Interestingly, in addition to the college's many traditions, the first perfect game pitched in the history of professional baseball occurred on what was known as The Agricultural Fairgrounds until 1911. On June 12, 1880, J. Lee Richmond of the Ruby Red Sox accomplished the feat beating Cleveland in a National League game. A marker commemorating the accomplishment is located on Sever Street in Worcester.
