"Because I Got High" is a comical novelty rap song by Afroman, from his albums Because I Got High and The Good Times, about how cannabis is degrading his quality of life. The song further explains how the author has missed court dates, had his paycheck garnished due to missed child support payments, gambled away his car payment, is left jacking off after not having sex with his girlfriend, and is now a paraplegic as the result of a police chase.
The song reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 in the UK, and is Afroman's only top 40 song.
[edit] Trivia
- As originally recorded, Afroman professes that he is from East Palmdale, CA. However this line of the song is not present in all reproductions of the song itself. For instance, the version of Because I Got High used in karaoke does not include these lyrics.
- This song was on the soundtrack of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and the music video for it was directed by Kevin Smith and featured Jay and Silent Bob smoking with Afroman.
- Part of the melody to the song is extremely close to the "Leaves of Green" section from the Yes epic "The Ancient: Giants Under the Sun" from the album Tales from Topographic Oceans.[citation needed]
- Bob Rivers parodied this song as "Be Claus I Got High" on his 2002 White Trash Christmas album.
- Italo-canadian comedian Frank Spadone parodied this song with his comedic track "I Drinki Tha Wine"
