[edit] Fair use for Ridge Route and Beale's Cut

Though this image may be subject to copyright, I (NE2) feel its use is covered by the U.S. fair use laws because:

  1. It is a photo that the California Department of Transportation has provided for free on their website.
  2. The photo is being used to show the the deep cut that travelers had to use before the Newhall Tunnel opened in 1910. The cut is no longer in this condition; rocks have fallen, making it much shallower. On Ridge Route, it displays the type of road that existed in the early days. On Beale's Cut, it shows what the cut was like.
