The concept for a Family All Inclusive Resort, was spawned partly from a demand by many of the guests at Sandals Resorts who had become parents and wanted their whole family to have the "Sandals" experience. Sandals Chairman - Gordon "Butch" Stewart a man famed for anticipating the future demands of the market, felt that the creation of a family friendly resort was a strategic move that would pay dividends in the future.

The Beaches Brand began in February 1997 with the opening of Beaches Negril, it was followed soon after by Beaches Inn (formerly Ponciana). The name was a failed attempt to create a new brand of hotels by making a tie in with the more established sister hotel Sandals Inn, the resort would later be renamed Beaches Sandy Bay. Beaches Turks and Caicos would be the next one in the series followed by the Resorts first Cuba property Beaches Varadero (due to the fact that U.S. visitors are not permitted easy travel, this resort is not marketed in the U.S., but is marketed heavily in Canada, Latin America and Europe.

The resorts have seen numerous changes and upgrades, most notably with Beaches Turks and Caicos, which is the largest and Beaches Negril. Both resorts feature a large water park and elaborate spas.

Beaches is also one of the primary sponsors of Sesame Street. Many of the shows characters feature very heavily in the daily activities of the resort and is a big selling point for the hotels.
