Beach Pneumatic Transit

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Beach Pneumatic Transit was the first attempt to build an underground public transit system in New York City.

In 1869, Alfred Ely Beach and his Beach Pneumatic Transit Company of New York constructed a secret pneumatic subway line under Broadway. Its single tunnel, 95 m long, 2.7 m diameter, was completed in 1870 and ran under Broadway from Warren Street to Murray Street.[1] The line was built as a demonstration of a pneumatic transit system, open to the public, and only operated for a few years. Beach was delayed in getting permission to extend it, and by the time he attained it in 1873, public and financial support had waned, and the subway was closed down.
