Bayview Elementary

Bayview Elementary School known as "School by the Bay" is an elementary school in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, which serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade. It is operated by Broward County Public Schools, a school district based in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

As of the 2004-05 school year, the school had an enrollment of 629 students. With 35 classroom teachers (on an FTE), the school had a student-teacher ratio of 18.0.[1]

After receiving a grade of "B" in the 1999-2000 school year, Bayview Elementary School has received a grade of "A" from the Florida Department of Education on each of its annual School Accountability Reports.[2]

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department has operated DARE courses at Bayview. A January 2003 police newsletter reported that "Eighty-One (81) 5th Grade students completed the DARE Program at Bayview and they are looking forward to being recognized as Drug Free individuals."[3]

In 1996, the school was visited by Brent W. Jett, Jr., a NASA astronaut who had flown a nine-day Space Shuttle mission earlier that year. Jett, whose mother teaches at Bayview Elementary School, later flew on other Shuttle missions in 1997, 2000 and 2006.[4]

For the 1985-86 school year, Bayview Elementary School was recognized with the Blue Ribbon Award from the United States Department of Education, the highest honor that an American school can achieve.[5][6]
