[edit] Additional Bawls Varients

Anyone else think there should be a mention of the mints? -Hench 21:54, Apr 10, 2005 (UTC)

I agree. Go for it. - Oxling 03:37, 2 May 2005 (UTC)
Someone needs to mentions Sno-Bawls too - Play 00:52, 6 September 2005 (UTC)

If it's Bawls related... put it up! Culture, flavors, varients, availability (something I stress, as it varies from location to location) products related to it, etc. --Ice 06:13, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Is it really appropriate to have a link to where to purchase this item?

Judzillah

Considering it's a difficult beverage to find, I'd argue that it's pertinent. Doesn't make much sense to not put it in.
Oxling 02:04, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Difficult? maybe i live in some bawls filled world, but its everywehre on the west coast, but including a link for this seems ok,
--alfrin 22:09, Jun 18, 2005 (UTC)
I can't find it anywhere in Wisconsin, save Lan party locations, and rarely in one of the computer retailers that carries it. - Ice

I have started a complex availability table in this talk section to pin down availability... for all I know I drank too much caffeine when editing again. --Ice 14:11, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

There's only one location I know of in the entire province of Nova Scotia that sells Bawls, so it is hard to find in some places.

[edit] Seriously, it's not a stub.

It looks like this is pretty much everything there is to know about Bawls (I even created a whole new page for the mints). Why is it still marked as a stub? I would change it myself but I'm kinda new so I don't want to piss everyone off. Also, why does it have two different stub markers? - Chriszuma 04:41, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

I don't think this deserves to be a stub any longer. --Oxling 11:11, 15 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Stub re-appeared, after much editing since the stub, I'm going to attempt to sneak a de-stubbing past the stub cron and peer review, if it deserves a stub at this point, I'd be surprised though. --Ice 06:13, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

(grouping of de-stub discussion items)

[edit] English concerns

The first sentence of an article should summarize the most significant attributes of the article's subject. The original sentence was: "Bawls is an energy drink marketed mainly towards computer gaming enthusiasts and paintballers." Really, that's peripheral info about how the drink relates to society. About the drink itself though, the stuff inside the bottle, the most important identifier is the caffeine content. Which is why I changed the first sentence to its current form.

This is 4th grade english folks. "Topic sentences," remember? - User:Xmnemonic

I had applied mild corrections to turn posessive plural to non-posessive plural terms last week, felt that should be mentioned here as well. --Ice 14:11, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Availability

I just spoke to 2 different reps that work for CompUSA, and apparantly they stopped supplying BAWLS nationwide.  :(

Contrary to what the acticle says, Bawls is not avalible in most stores that soft drinks are sold everywhere in the US. It is actually rather hard to find in many locations including Michigan. Here in Michigan, only a few stores that cater to the gaming crowd carry the drink.

I live in Brighton, MI. I can find it at the two Brighton 7/11's. I have bought their entire stock though once for a lan.... Xexos 03:00, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

Michigan, cool. I live in Northen Michigan, and the only place anywhere near here is Area 51 Internet Gaming Center. --Navarro

Wisconsin has poor to no supply, also. CompUSA rarely has it in stock, LAN party locations may or may not have it, and it is generally hard to find. I had argued this before when using a refrence to Thinkgeek as a source in the original version of this article. --Ice

Perhaps a note on where this stuff is sold (as in countries) would be helpful (I've never heard of it before) - Sajt 23:49, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Trying to get Availability into it's own section, been some resistance before, I think tonight it'll happen. --Ice 06:32, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Add your locale, rate and keep this list alphabetical by country, then by region, and so on down the line, minimum resolution part of city if there is varience from one area of the city to another. Postal codes and nation > state/provence/etc > city will improve this greatly overall.

Encountered bawls, know it's dry, feel free to add, try to be as tight on the resolution as possible as I do intend to eventaully take this data and create a world map of bawls availability.

Please exclude online retailers in this demographic data. Most cover 1 or more continents and thus would harshly skew results. LAN Parties should also be excluded as they are events, and not suppliers able to provide regular supply.

Some anon just added that it is available at Albertsons and I'm not sure if that is entirely correct. I've never seen it at the Alberstons here in Bend, Oregon. So, is my area just weird, or is this a ficticious statement? Useless Fodder 17:34, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

It is possible that the particular store or franchise orders it, so reports can vary, a system should probobly be developed to figure out if it's franchise or chain that carries it, CompUSA is a good one for 'chain' but like I noted earlier, places may not carry it even though their chain does. --Ice 06:26, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

In Alberta, Canada 7-ll's carry Bawls, like it's no big thing. Fairly ubiquitous. I have not seen it in paintball supply places here. I have never seen the Bawls Slurpee. *mind boggles* -Dr Haggis - Talk 04:53, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

In South Bend, IN, there is a large supply of Bawls in the regular bottles, although I have yet to see mints. I also found SnoBawls here yesterday, and my local LAN center is getting a machine. Maybe we should update the SnoBawls section, because it appears that it is out of the "beta" and is now being spread to smaller cities. DarkSideMoon 22:53, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

In (Undisclosed Location), the only place I can buy bawls is this one store run by either italian or greek immagrants and when I buy any, they look at me weird like I'm buying porn.

[edit] Help

I would like to help with this and add it to my desk. --Navarro

I'm back... sure, any help is good. --Ice

[edit] Saving the bottles

I've noticed a trend around my area with LANers saving the bawls bottles. I've seen it at larger LANs as well, such as the 800 man PDXlan. I was wondering if this was a local thing or if this can be consitered a normal practice. If it is, I'd love to add it to the article. - Useless Fodder 08:22, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

We should go into this in the culture section of the actual article. --Ice 06:32, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

I also ( and all my friends) keep the bottles, im not sure why, mabye because it looks cool... Xexos 03:00, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks a bunch, I think it's a nice addition. I like the culter section. :) Useless Fodder 00:54, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] POV describing taste

It says 'delicious' refering to the taste, which is an opinion. I'm expunging 'delicious' for now, if it is felt necessary can be put back in. 172.160.95.124 05:50, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Makes sense, I didn't like seeing it there but didn't think of a good enough reason to remove 'delicious' from the article. --Ice 06:32, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Big reminder, personal opinion is better left for reviews, NOT THE ARTICLE'S LINKS SECTION! people want a review, they can go to reviews, which should probobly become a section of links if we get more than 3. --Ice 05:41, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Personal note

Yay for Wikipedia revisions while consuming bawls! --Ice 06:32, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 10 oz. vs. 12 oz.

When I originally wrote this article, I had a 12 oz bottle in my hand, so I used that, recently another author changed the ammount to 10 oz in the section describing caffeine content, I prefere 12 but didn't see reason to change it back. Though one option might be a sidebar on caffeine by type of Bawls product (since we now have 4 varieties for such a side bar.) --Ice 03:04, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

I'm a little confused...when you say you had a 12 oz bottle, you mean a bottle of Bawls? I wasn't aware Bawls came in a 12 oz bottle. --Chan-Ho (Talk) 12:14, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Checking out their website, (see FAQ: how many calories are in a bottle of Bawls?), it seems clear that they only sell 10 oz bottles. Anyway, I'm guessing the other editor changed the amount in his/her edit because originally the section stated that the amount per 12 oz bottle was such-and-such. I don't think the objection was to stating the amount of caffeine per 12 oz (even Bawls own website does that). --Chan-Ho (Talk) 12:21, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Hrm, it's possible that they may have changed the size, but if you look at the original draft of the article, you'll see me quote from the bawls bottle I had in my cubard (see collecting under culture), a 12oz bottle claiming 80 mg of caffeine, as that was what I originally had. As there is new evidence, I think statement based on 10 oz would be valid as it does come directly from the Bawls web site, thus a trusted source in the matter. I'm not specifically against, just was confused.
Though by sidebar, I mean a listing of various Bawls products (Bawls, sugar free, mints, and SnoBawls) as there is now a large selection of bawls flavors, a sidebar can be justified.
Though I am wondering if dropping 12 oz is needed or if 12 oz exists still (and thus it's information would still be required) if 12 oz was discontinued, mention of it for historical reasons should be maintained I feel. --Ice 12:35, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Caffeine Stronger then Coffee?

"A 10oz bottle of Bawls contains 67mg of caffeine, which occurs naturally in guarana and is 2.5 times stronger than the caffeine found in coffee, tea, or regular soft drinks. In comparison, an 8oz cup of coffee contains around 100-120mg depending on the method of brewing." I don't quite understand this statement. Does this mean that the caffeine found in Guarana is stronger then the caffeine found in coffee? This sounds like something that could use a citation, as I don't see any mention of that on the guarana page. --Judzillah 01:10, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

I knew someone would ask sooner or later...:-) Anyway, this is a claim made by Bawls, but I haven't personally seen any evidence of this. It's also a sloppy statement, as what they really mean is that the mixture of stimulants they get from guarana is a potent blend of caffeine and other alkaloids (cf caffeine for an explanation of how in nature caffeine is often found with other stimulants). Presumably, the guarana caffeine blend is particularly stronger, 2.5 times stronger than the mixture from a coffee bean. Again, I don't know if this is really true. But it sounds like an interesting thing to research and find out. --Chan-Ho (Talk) 01:23, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick response! I added a citation needed tag to the statement, and if I find some time later, I'll try to research this a bit more (although caffeine isn't really my speciality!) --Judzillah 05:36, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
Note that the current citation goes to Bawls' marketing pages. That is a horrible reference to chemical information. Claims that some caffeine is "stronger" than any other type of caffeine is pretty much just marketing bullsh*t. What they probably mean is the combination of alkaloids mentioned above by Chan-ho. (or they just wrote that to sound cool) Anyhow, the claim in its current form not at all NPOV and thus not suitable for Wikipedia. 88.112.194.137 21:55, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

Sadly, yeah, I did drag that statement over from the Bawls website when I was attempting to fact find initially, so I take the blame, but yes, looking at [[1]] which may or may not be a reliable source, I think Jolt and Red Bull beat Bawls per oz. so yeah, removing that claim won't be challenged. Guarana is said to be a healthier source of caffeine than the types used by cola companies, but I'd ask if anyone's found proof, or if I'd be pulling trivia out of lacks source land again. --Ice 19:33, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Full Throttle?!?

Does anyone else think it is lame that I just edited this article whilst under the influence of Full Throttle and not Bawls? My university is lame and sponsored by Coke so we have Full Throttle machines and not Bawls.--Lwieise -=- Talk to Me 10:56, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

Due to the local (lack of) availability in my town, I'm usually on Mountain Dew when editing, which... while my staple drink is 'passable' by comparison, I feel for ya. --Ice 11:17, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pictures

Can anybody find pictures of the bottles, because the page looks very dull and it is known for its distinctive bottle so if anybody can edit them in that would be great.- Nintendonien 01:52, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

I'm pulling out my camera now... Useless Fodder 05:28, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
Done and done. I'll find my better camera if requested. It's late here right now, though. If the caption on the second photo seems self-serving it can be changed. I'm just proud of my littel collection. :) Useless Fodder 06:12, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, sorry, but links like that are discouraged, for obvious reasons. I'll remove the link to your user page and just say "a relatively small..." --Chan-Ho (Talk) 06:53, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Thank you!!! The page looks much better with pictures. ; ) - Nintendonien 22:48, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

SnoBawls drinkers (yay test market/limited availability), any of you have a camera... :) --Ice 19:36, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] SnoBawls Availability

Does anybody know where/if it is available? There is no mention on it's availability on the website. - Nintendonien 17:58, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

As of right now, it is only available in Dallas, TX 7-Elevens. It is a trial period I suppose before they release it to a broader market. I think an energy drink Slurpee would be magnificent. Keep checking 7-11.--Lwieise -=- Talk to Me 03:56, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
There is an energy drink Slurpee. It's called Frawg. WARNING: Drinking melted Frawg tastes like you're drinking pure energy. I don't really know why. Useless Fodder 20:47, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

The Bawls Website has improved the listing for SnoBawls now... and I want to try a melted frozen energy drink now... that sounds like my kind of beverage (likely very high syrup concentration) --Ice 19:38, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] BAWLS OR Bawls?

Which word has the correct capitalization? BAWLS Guarana Inc. has it always capitalized, but it can be visually displeasing if left in all capitals. The article has both words. I like the all capital letters approach, but what do you guys think?

[edit] Vanilla?

I'm pretty sure the taste is closer to bubble gum... - 70.81.118.123 13:00, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Non-suggestive name

How does one talk about Bawls without eliciting a chorus of giggles from the less mature geeks in ones social net? -Dr Haggis - Talk 04:56, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

You don't. Instead, you try and make every statement about the beverage as suggestive as possible Viewtyjoe 04:36, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

"Hey dude, let's go get some bawls, and maybe afterwards we can play with our wiis!"

The suggestive name is quite likely the reason for it's overwhelming popularity among nerds. That's half the point of drinking it. Also... "Semen_swapping" Don't even try to say the connection was unintended. Cheers! CKnapp 22:52, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

A quick scan of the article reveals that there is no reference to the suggestive name, or its place in geek culture.

[edit] Most caffeinated

Removed this: A 10oz bottle of Bawls contains 67mg of caffeine, which occurs naturally in guarana and is 2.5 times stronger than the caffeine found in coffee, tea, or regular soft drinks[2]. This makes Bawls the most highly caffeinated soft drink in the market.

That claim is made by the company that produces the merchandise and is unverifiable and, best I can tell, untrue.

I just reverted your deletion as you didn't provide any legitimate reasoning behind the deletion. I did some research and found this link, which mentions Bawls as the third most caffeinated drink. hoopydinkConas tá tú? 03:35, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

That link says nothing more that guarana contains a higher volume of caffeine than kola nut, and that bawls has caffeine in a certain quantity. It doesn't address the issue that the claim that the caffeine in Bawls is 2.5 times stronger than normal caffeine is untrue.

Besides, the discussion of this is irrelevant, because bawls doesn't use a guarana slurry or anything, it uses natural flavors derived from guarana and straight caffeine. Its bottle says as much. God bless the pure food and drug act.

FireNexus 10:10pm 6-July-2006

Please, STOP re-introducing false advertising info. The manufacturer's ingredients list mentions plain caffeine (which could be natural or synthetic) and guarana flavor which doesn't need to be extracted from guarana but could also be synthetic as long as its chemical structure is identical to the natural one. The factor 2.5 really means that the concentration of caffeine in Bawls is 2.5 times the concentration in Coca-Cola. Jclerman 15:15, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

I have to second Jclerman's statement, also I may merge this with the coffee discussion above... --Ice 19:40, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] erroneous claims

1.

Made from guarana, a highly caffeinated berry native to the Amazonian rainforest...

2.

Guarana’s naturally occurring caffeine is 2.5 times stronger that the type of caffeine usually found in coffee, tea and soft drinks, making BAWLS the most highly caffeinated soft drink in the market...

My comments:

  • 1. The ingredients, as listed on the containers, show guarana flavor, rather than guarana berries. See the section above: "Most caffeinated".
  • 2. The claim is doubly incorrect.
  • (a) The caffeine does not originate from guarana (see 1, above).
  • (b) The drink tables (see guarana, caffeine, and energy drink) indicate that Bawls contains 2.5 more caffeine than Coca-Cola, for equal volumes of drink.

Jclerman 02:06, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

I'm game for information provided we can hunt down sources more reliable than a marketing page. --Ice 12:43, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

  • I'm sorry, but the writer of this particular page is wrong. It doesn't say guarana flavour, it says "Natural Guarana Extract" which can only be extracted from guarana berries. No one would list "guarana berries" as an ingredient, because I doubt that they use whole berries in the drink. For the second claim, I don't see how the user has provided information to the contrary of the claim. La Bicyclette 00:35, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] mint in a bawls

there used to be a bit in the article about how people dropped a bawls mint into the drink and called it a fuzzy bawls. What happened to that? unverifiable? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Technic (talkcontribs).

Probably. Google only gives 16 hits, none reliable sources. — Saxifrage 00:19, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
Wouldn't this seem to indicate otherwise? --Eyrian 00:23, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
That would be one of those non-reliable sources. No references, no indication of editorial oversight. We could say that thinkgeek sells mints and suggests such a use, but that doesn't support the statement that it's actually done. — Saxifrage 04:12, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Article name

Shouldnt the article be renamed BAWLS? That's the correct name of the drink, it even says so on the bottle! [wossi] 01:49, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
