Who is this Major Niazi who surrenders on Dec. 16? Major Malik is cited as the Pakistani leader, and the battle is said to end Dec. 13. Someone with knowledge, please clarify or correct!

Corrected. Idleguy 08:42, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

There was no Major Niazi in 205 bde as BM(Brigade Major). This Bde HQ was having thr fol offrs then:- Comd - Brig Tajjamal Hussain, BM Major Anees(from Engrs who was saked and Major Mazhar took over as BM during the war.Major Anees as I was told-winner of sword of honour: very capable offr, but for unknown reasons on arrival of Brig Tajjamal , he sacked him). Capt Naeem ,Arty Sc(later shaheed during the last days of war,due to ecessive bleeding as was told to me). Capt Akram , AC GSO III

205 Bde was having these units--- 8 BaluchPanch bibi) , 4 FF(Hilli)13 FF (Nagao)> I feel Major Niazi was from 8 Baluch. 80 Fd Regt(Bty at Hilli with 4 FF, Bty Comd Major Anwar Khan later I saw him as Brig) , 29 Cav 3 toy tks at HilliLt Sher Jan Tajjak, pl ex 34 Punjab(hilli-with 4 FF)

Major Gul now again this major niazi has been shown in the otjer image from 38 punjab where as according to my knowledge this unit was not at all in east pakistan major gul

This page has some information errors. First of all, 16th Division was responsible for the entire North Western sector of East Pakistan which was opposed by India's 33 Corps, which had 20th Mountain Division under command. Brigadier Shafi's brigade was responsible for the northern part of this sector, whereas 205 Brigade of Brig. Tajammul was responsible for the southern part, which was opposed by 20th Mountain Division. So therefore, the opposing strengths should be 20th Mountain Division vs 205 Brigade and not 16th December. Secondly, Battle of Hilli is never looked at as an individual battle but a series of battles fought by 205 Brigade in this sector against the advance of 20th Mountain Division. Historians refer to this as the Battle of Hilli-Bogra (which is 40 Kms away from Hilli). Hilli was just the first of the many battles fought in the middle (Such as Badhuria, Rangpur and Bogra itself). The main significant here is that in Hilli, Indian army were adamant on putting a frontal assault against Hilli which as elsewhere in East Pakistan wherever a frontal attack was carried out, did not materialize, and Indians would normally bypass wherever tough resistance from Pakistani forces was seen. Here, they did not do so until 11th December, after which point they established a block behind Hilli and therefore, Pakistani forces withdrew from Hilli for defence of Bogra. Also, this battle started on 23rd November.
