The date is off, most likely by a year - January 2 1944 is before the invasion of Normandy.

The first sentence of the second paragraph appears to be misplaced/doesn't flow with the rest of the paragraph. It's not clear what the "however" in the 2nd sentence is contradicting in the first sentence, and from it one assumes that the first sentence is supposed to be something like "The allies didn't think Aachen was important and thus didn't want to invade it."
