[edit] The Game

The premise of Shipwrecked: Battle of the Islands is similar to elements of Survivor and Big Brother in that a number of strangers from the age range of 18-25 are placed on two opposing islands off the south pacific, namely the Cook Islands. The game begins with ten "wreckees" being divided into two teams of five players each and are given basic supplies plus a flag to denote their status as either a Tiger or Shark. On every Sunday (dependent on the decision of the producers) a new "wreckee" joins the castaways and spends three days on each island. The following Sunday after the Beach Party the new castaway then chooses his or her island they decide to live on. Some occasions occur when two new castaways join at the same time but these are few and far between and usually happen when one tribe is steadily lower in number in comparison to the rival island. In total there are fifteen new arrivals for each island to persuade to join.

Unlike other reality shows that involve dexterity, will power etc. Challenges on Shipwrecked are basic swimming tasks that involve a small pontoon anchored between the rival islands. During the five months at any given time (day or night) a klaxon will sound signalling that there are goodies to be stolen. The first tribe member to reach the pontoon will receive the prizes whilst the opposing tribe must leave with nothing.

The game runs on a 7-day cycle, occuring with the beach party that happens on Sunday, then the new wreckee living with the first tribe from Sunday Night-Thursday Morning then the second tribe from Thursday Morning until Sunday Evening at the beach party, afterwich a new wreckee joins and the cycle repeats although there have been weeks without new contestants.

[edit] Island Nominations

The following is a list of which wreckee asked to move and the opposing tribes response.

Week 2: Lucy to join Sharks - Accepted

Week 6: Lucy to re-join Tigers - Accepted

Week 8: Amy to join the Sharks - Accepted

Week 10: Sophia and Allen to join the Sharks - Sophia is Accepted whilst Allen is Denied.

N.B. Lucy has used both nominations and cannot move back to Sharks.

N.B. Week 10 is the first time that two people from the same tribe have requested to move islands. And the Sharks can only choose one person to join them.

[edit] Punishments

The following is a list of people who have broken rules and the subsequent punishments given to those involved.

Week 1: Lucy and Lianne by sneaking onto Shark Island to leave an assortment of thongs for the boys.

Punishment: Lucy and Lianne were banished from the following weeks beach party.

Week 7: Lucy and Terri by sneaking onto Shark Island to steal a flipper.

Punishment: Because there was a rule break and the Tigers failed to admit who went over, the Sharks were granted the chance to have one Tiger as a hostage for a week. They chose Terri.

Week 9: Stevie and Will Colin swam to Tiger Island to ask Ben, Fiona and Terri to join the Sharks for a single night to celebrate Stevie's 21st birthday. All but Fiona accepted the invitation.

Punishment: Will Colin and Terri moved to the opposing island for three weeks.

[edit] Controversy

To date, three contestants (2 in the series, 1 set to join) have been in the National Press for acts of racism, theft and accusing of putting castaways into a bad light on purpose for the sake of ratings.

On the Season Premiere, contestant Lucy Buchanan was put into a bad press when she stated that she backs slavery, claiming black people are "really bad" and saying she was open to many cultures but should not bring them to Britain. Ofcom received 196 complaints[1] the press attention also called for Bristol University to consider axing her from the programme she enrolled in[2]. This came just after Celebrity Big Brother contestants Jade Goody, Jo O'Meara and Danielle Lloyd were accused of racism towards Bollywood Star Shilpa Shetty

Shark Island contestant Lorenzo Preecha defended claims that Lucy was a racist saying she was "a pawn in their game" and "she is being used by the producers". He also revealed that the most entertaining contestant will win an additional £15,000 for themselves which Channel4 have called "Shipwrecker of the Year"' in which the public during the series run can vote on their favourite contestant[3]. Days later, it is revealed that Lorenzo decided to quit the contest after three weeks, but he actually left on Day 70[4].

Week 12 contestant Louis Rennocks was charged with theft of alcohol from a local Sainsbury's and may be fined his winnings if the tribe he joins, wins[5]. He was later arrested at Heathrow airport on the 26 January 2007[6].

[edit] Tribes

On Episode Eleven, new arrival Ella joined the Sharks putting them in the lead with 11, but with Allen now gone from the Tigers this left them with just 7 on their island.

[edit] Trivia

Shipwrecked: Battle of the Islands 2007 is the first season to divide the first ten contestants by their gender.

Lucy Buchanan is the only castaway to use up both her island moves.

Lorenzo Preecha is the second person to leave the game, same as Geoff from the previous season. What is more interesting to note is that they are both alumni of the Shark Tribe.

Sophia and Allen (both members of the Tiger Island) opted to nominate themselves in Week 10 this marks the first time two or more islanders have chose to move from the same island.

Allen Brandie marks the first time a member of Tiger Island voluntarily left the game.

The castaways this year have tripled the punishment rate in comparison to last year. So far there have been three acts of rule breaking (namely, stepping onto the rival island without permission) with Terri being the main culprit or being apart of a scheme to break rules.
