Redwall Abbey's south wall has collasped so Midge has convinced Damug to attack the ridge where the woodlanders are waiting. Unfortunately the Rapscallions have stolen a march on the woodlanders. Damug sends half of his force, led by Rapmark Skaup and Bluggach. The woodlanders make the best use of the steep nes of the ridge and attack with ranged weapons. They then mount a counter charge and thrown the rapscallions back. Damug now knows the woodlanders weakness and strengths. The battle rages to dusk where Major Perigold in command of the woodlander launches a large oil soaked flame burning tree off the ridge. Damug's forces are deciminated, but the woodlanders and dazed and confused. They gather at the summit, but Damug's forces mount a pincer attack trapping the woodlanders. At that very moment Lady Cregga leading the Long Patrol spots the flaming tree, Drill Sergeant Clubbrush orders runners Dorothy and Algabor to investigate and becomes known for the only hare to disobey a command from a badger ruler. Meanwhile the rapscallions attempt to parley and a duel commences against the waterhog chief and Bluggach. Bluggach is killed, but the rapscallions charge. Damug Warfang get captures Major Perigold and is about to kill him when Lady Cregga and the Long Patrol run in reinforcing the woodlanders. The rapscallions are routed and the battle is won.
