The Battle of West Hunan was one of the major engagements involving 100,000 troops in the Second Sino-Japanese War.

Wanting to secure airfields and railroads in Hunan, the IJA amassed forces in early April to prepare for an attack. The NRA responded by transferring 2 army groups under He Yingqin to defend the area.

In the first phase of the battle, the NRA defended against the Japanese attack, and in the second phase, with help from the USAF and NRA Air Force, encircled and beat back the Japanese, turning the battle into a rout. The Japanese retreated after sustaining more than 20,000 casualties.
