The Battle of Tarapacá was fought on November 27, 1879 between Chile and Peru. The Chilean General Erasmo Escala sent about a small force with 6 Krupp rifles and 4 La Hitte smoothbores, under the command of Lt. Coronel Eleuterio Ramírez to attack the Peruvians who were led by Coronel Andrés Avelino Cáceres, thinking them disorganized and demoralized. The Chileans, however, had underestimated the size of the Peruvian army, and as a result, they were defeated and their guns captured.
