[edit] Background
U.S. Army General Stephen Watts Kearny had moved out of Fort Leavenworth in Kansas with roughly 1,700 men in the Army of the West. His objective was to march cross country into California. He first encountered Mexican forces in August at Santa Fe, the capital of the Mexican Province of New Mexico in August.
[edit] Occupation
Governor Manuel Armijo was forced to flee the city without firing a shot, and it was occupied by Kearny.
[edit] Aftermath
From Santa Fe, Kearny sent Colonel Alexander Doniphan further south into Mexico. Kearny became the military governor of the New Mexico Territory on August 18 and established a civilian government there before he took the remainder of his army and moved on to California.
