In the Battle of Koprukoy the Russians advanced to Erzurum. The Russians achieved total surprise and destroyed an Ottoman division that was in winter quarters at Battle of Koprukoy.

In the beginning the Russian column advanced towards Erzurum and encountered Turkish troops outside the city of Koprukoy on January 14. The Russians immediately launched attacks against the chain of Turkish forts around Koprukoy. Most of the forts were captured by the Russians on the 14th, and the rest of the Forts were captured by the Russians on January 15. The Turks retreated from the town, but were surrounded by Russian troops outside of Koprukoy. After three hours of intense fighting outside of Koprukoy, the Turkish troops surrendered to Russians and the Russians continued their advance on Erzurum.

At four o'clock that day, with artillery fire from the thirty fourth division, the 102nd regiment captured Sansor Tepe. It was to continue the battle with the twenty eight division of the ninth corps and the eighteen and thirty-fourth divisions of the eleventh corps. The thirty-third division was to advance from the south of the Aras river and than turn north, cross the river, and suddenly attack the Russian front.^[2]
