The Battle of Cancha Rayada was fought on March 16, 1818, between Spain and Chilean rebels. The Chileans were led by José de San Martín, an Argentine who had crossed the Andes with an army to liberate Chile. The Spanish attacked at 19:30, when the last thing the patriots expected was a battle. The result was a huge retreat of the rebels, who took revenge in the Battle of Maipú.
