Yavin - Hoth - Bespin - Endor |
The Battle of Bespin was a fictional conflict in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and in Star Wars: Battlefront.
While attempting an escape from the Battle of Hoth, the hyperdrive on the Millennium Falcon malfunctioned. After an aborted repair attempt (hidden in a "cave" on an asteroid - which was actually a space slug) and in an attempt to escape from Imperial forces, Han Solo took the Falcon, along with Chewbacca, C-3PO and Princess Leia, to Bespin to see his old friend, Lando Calrissian, who would be able to fix the hyperdrive.
A bounty hunter, shown to be Boba Fett, informed Darth Vader that the Falcon had gone to Bespin, and Vader's forces beat Solo there. Vader made a deal with Lando that he would either turn Solo over to him to use as a test subject for freezing people in carbonite, or the Imperials would take over the city. Lando chose to protect his people and his city by turning Han to the Empire.
A short time after they reached Bespin's Cloud City, Solo, Chewbacca, and Princess Leia were captured, and C-3PO was blasted to pieces. To trick Luke Skywalker to coming to Bespin, a number of troops tortured Han so that Luke would sense his pain through the Force. He was then frozen in carbonite in order to test whether or not Luke would survive being frozen. Solo, in a carbonite block, was presented to Boba Fett so he could receive a bounty posted on Han's head from Jabba the Hutt.
When Luke arrived at Cloud City, he was separated from R2-D2 and fought Vader in a lightsaber duel. Luke got his right hand severed, and Vader revealed a startling revelation to him: Vader was Luke's father. Vader then offered Luke a part of the Empire's rule, but Luke turned it down and escaped by dropping down an exhaust shaft. He was then rescued by Lando and the Falcon after contacting Leia through the Force.
Vader left Cloud City in his Imperial shuttle and headed to his Star Destroyer. Admiral Piett had made sure that Han's hyperdrive was sabotaged whilst on Bespin, instead of being repaired. However, R2-D2 - who escaped on the Falcon - managed to repair the damage quickly. After the Falcon's escape, Vader nearly executed Piett, but spared him instead.
A garrison of Imperial troops was stationed on Cloud City. However, the Rebel Alliance sent a group to engage the Imperial garrison. Soon, most of the Imperial troops in Cloud City were destroyed, with heavy losses for both sides.
However, there was still Imperial activity in the outlying Tibanna mining facilities. A fierce sky battle took place there, and the Rebels secured the facilities.
Even so, there were still a number of Imperial owned gas platforms. Wedge Antilles of Rogue Squadron was sent to Bespin to capture the remaining platforms for the Rebel Fleet assembling near Sullust.
