Bati (Fiji)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bati means soldier, bodyguard in Fijian.[1]

Bati is the Fijian term for the island's traditional warrior class or caste. The Bati are traditionally among the strongest Fijians. Each Fijian village has a chief and under him, a Bati. The title is usually passed on to sons, unless a challenger manages to earn himself the title. The title "Bati Lailai" is bestowed upon second sons. In ancient times, such as when King Moafa from Tonga tried to invade Fiji, the Bati were sent to war.[citation needed]
