FC Bathelona is an amateur football team, based in Bath, UK.
It was founded in the Summer of 2003 by a group of English, Scottish, Irish and possibly Welsh players primarily to go on tour to Bergerac in France. From humble beginnings it has evolved into a dynamic sports and social club with a variety of spin-offs including Tennis, Running, Music, Curry and (potentially) Gardening Clubs. It also has an active WAGs section.
Although it does not actually share the motto of its more famous Catalan footballing cousin FC Barcelona : "Més que un club" (More than a club), this sentiment is representative of the club's ethos.
[edit] Origins
The club can trace its origins back to a group of Architecture Students at Bath University in 1982, who founded a football team called Wiggly Tin Wednesday FC (so-called after a slang term for their favourite roofing material, corrugated iron).
The club originally met for training on a Wednesday, but when the club reformed, this moved to a Monday night.
In recent years, the club has been overrun by Medics.
[edit] Le Tour
2007 sees the fifth annual tour back to Bergerac, from 23rd to 29th May. Being the fifth tour, it will be named in honour of V Masani, Bathelona's favourite, and indeed only father of twins. Whether V manages to attend or not, it is expected that much of the fifth anniversary celebrations will centre around V's name.
The three opposition teams are expected to be Bergerac, Faux and La Sauvetat. FC Bergerac have offered to take the team kayaking on the Saturday, followed by an evening at 'Le Windsor' nightclub, where Sunday League Manager Rob Lucas is expected to resume his customary dancing position in one of the cages, before driving any willing members of the touring party to watch the sunrise at Soumensac.
It is also expected that current holder of the Prestigious 'Drawing Prize' Alan Carroll will again show off his firm grasp of the offside rule while running the line, and continue to exhibit a surprising ability to play ping pong at 5am.
[edit] Bathelona Ball
The first Bathelona Ball took place in 2005. Bathelona's Director of Football and originator of the Sunday League team Chris Rogers hosted the event with his partner Denise Coughlin at Lyncombe Court, the Georgian Manor House they bought in 2003.
The second Bathelona Ball will take place on August 11th 2007. Chris and Denise will again host the event, which this year will have a Casino theme. The band Backflash are booked to play, having impressed at Nipper's wedding in the Autumn of 2006.
The Bathelona Band are expected to stage a reunion gig, having been such an enormous hit at the first Bathelona Ball. Tickets are now available to purchase from Kerry Kelley, at the very reasonable price of £45, with all proceeds going to the CF Trust.
