I have been looking up villas in the south of France on property websites and some of the most expensive are described as bastides. Could someone explain this usage in the article please? Is it something akin to the English manor house.? Piccadilly 03:17, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] First recorded bastide?

This article currently has "starting around 1229, the date of the first recorded bastide", but the 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica has "Mont-de-Marsan, the oldest of the bastides, was founded in 1141, and the movement for founding them lasted during the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries". The French wikipedia article has it both ways, talking about the "prehistory" of the bastide from 1144 (Montauban) to 1248. Can anyone with actual knowledge of French medieval history comment? If not, I'll try to summarize the French article. David Brooks 16:50, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Article title

Another thing - is there a reason this article isn't "Bastide"? It's normal for articles to use the singular, and it's singular in the other language articles. David Brooks 16:50, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
