Basics is the 42nd and 43rd of Star Trek: Voyager, the cliffhanger between the second and third seasons.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Ensign Suder returns, having been confined to his quarters for life as punishment for his murder of Crewman Darwin. He has attempted to make amends for this, making several agricultural advancements. Suder is happy that his work might benefit the crew. His homicidal tendencies seem to be well under control.

A seeming traitor to the Kazon and Seska alliance is taken on board, though Chakotay remains suspicious. The man kills himself in a grisly, violent explosion, severely damaging Suder's quarters.

The ship is attacked by a powerful Kazon force. Despite several technological tricks, including holoprojections that unintentionally involve the Doctor, the ship is boarded and taken. The self-destruct is tried but important systems simply had been too damaged.

The crew is dumped on a volcanic planet full of hostile-seeming natives. Only two crew members are left on board. The Doctor...and Ensign Suder.

The two risk their lives to repel the intruders. In the end, with the help of Tom Paris and the Talaxians, all of the Kazon are dead or have abandoned ship. The crew of Voyager retake the ship, and continue their journey homeward
