Basic Service Set

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The basic service set (BSS) is the basic building block of an IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN (according to the IEEE 802.11-1999 standard). Coverage of one access point is called a BSS. An access point acts as a master to control the stations within that BSS. Each BSS is identified by an SSID. The most basic BSS is two STAs in IBSS mode. In infrastructure mode, a basic BSS consists of at least one STA and one access point.

In infrastructure mode, groups of BSSs can be connected together with the use of a backbone network and form a network called an Extended Service Set.
