Bashir Jehangiri

Justice Muhammad Bashir Jehangiri was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan from 07 January 2002 to 31 January 2002. Priorly, he served as Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court. His Lordship was born on 1.2.1937 at Mansehra proper. Matriculated from M.L.High School, Lahore in 1953, in the first Division securing 73% marks; He stood third in F.A. in the University and B.A. (First Class First) from Abbottabad, in 1958 & 1960 respectively. He did his L.L.B from University Law College Peshawar in 1962 and; joined the Bar in February, 1963. After qualifying the West Pakistan P.C.S. (Judicial) Branch Exam., he was appointed as Civil Judge on 7.3.1966. After serving at various stations as Civil Judge and Senior Civil Judge, he was promoted as Additional District and Session Judge in B-18 on 6.7.1974 and again as District and Session Judge in B-19 and B-20 on 24 October, 1974 and 27 December 1981 respectively. His Lordship also served as Judicial Commissioner, Northern Areas at Gilgit very successfully w.e.f. 26.6.1979. His Lordship reported to the Provincial Government on the forenoon of 23.12.1982 and after availing 77 days earned leave took-over charge as Special Judge, Customs, Taxation and Anti-Smuggling (Central) NWFP, Peshawar on 12.3.1983 and relinquished this charge on 15th September, 1984 (after noon). He took-over charge as Joint Secretary, Ministry of Justice and Parliamentary Affairs (Justice Division), Islamabad, on 12.9.1984. He had under–gone advance course in Public Administration and Development for 100 days at National Institute of Public Administration, Lahore, in 1977 and also Shariah Course in Shariah Academy International Islamic University Islamabad, w.e.f. 2.12.1983 to 26.2.1984. His Lordship has also attended the United Nations Institute for Asia and Far East Course for 3 months regarding “Prevention of Crime and Treatment of Offenders” at Fuchu, Tokyo, Japan, in the year 1986. His Lordship also participated as a Legal Member of the Pakistan Delegation in the UN sponsored Geneva Accords on Afghanistan held on 14th April, 1988. The Hon’ble Judge was elevated as Judge of Peshawar High Court on 1st October, 1988. His Lordship also attended the World Law Conference, held in Argentina in the year 1993. His Lordship was elevated as Adhoc Judge on 22.2.1995 and then as Judge of Supreme Court on 30.3.1996. The Hon’ble Judge was also represented Chief Justice of Pakistan in Chief Justices’ Conference and Law Asia Annual Meeting held in Manila (Philippines) in August, 1997.


Mr. Justice Muhammad Bashir Jehangiri has been appointed as Acting Wafaqi Mohtasib on 10th February, 2000. In this capacity he chaired the meeting of the Asian Ombudsman Association held from 17th to 20th July 2000 in Manila, Philippines. The Hon’ble Wafaqi Mohtasib recently represented Asian Region as President of Asian Ombudsman Association and attended the 7th International Conference of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) held in Durban, South Africa from 27th October to 3rd November, 2000.

Mr. Justice Mohammad Bashir Jehangiri retired as the Chief Justice of Pakistan in January, 2002.
