BASFA
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bay Area Science Fiction Association (BASFA) is one of the Bay Area's largest science fiction fandom organizations. The organization was founded at the SiliCon science fiction convention in 1989 by several Bay Area Smofs looking for a reason to meet.
[edit] Organization
BASFA has an elected president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary, who serve until a new election is called or until that official has missed thirteen consecutive meetings. Terms of service often last several years uninterrupted.
The club's activities revolve mainly around social meetings held at a restaurant in the South San Francisco Bay Area. Meetings themselves involve recreational parliamentary procedure, including Official Reports, Announcements of upcoming events, Reviews of books and movies of genre interest, and a meeting-ending Rumor of the Week. These, along with the designation of the previous meeting's minutes, tend to be hotly contested battles involving members buying votes. BASFA also regularly runs parties at local science fiction conventions.
Two notable aspects of BASFA's meetings are the Numismatic Responsibility Act, in which puns are taxed and the moneys added to the club's funds; and the Chicago-style voting, in which a member may buy up to five additional votes for any single matter.
Minutes of the meetings are published in the independent SF fanzine Science Fiction/San Francisco.
