BTW, I think that the barrow wights are in fact evil men. Anybody any thoughts?

They were evil spirits, sent by the Witch-king of Angmar. It is very likely that they were indeed the spirits of evil Men, or Orcs, but it is nowhere stated just what spirits they were. The only other occurence of evil spirits of the kind which springs to mind are the spirits sent by Gorthaur (Sauron) to Dorthonion, to drive out the men of Barahir (Beren's father), from the Silmarillion.
