Smith then headed off to New Jersey to study art at the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art. He learned the artistic as well as the business end of cartooning. He graduated with a classical animation degree and headed to California to make his fortune in the "gold rush".

Smith ended up working as an animator for Sierra On-Line for six years and worked on a variety of games, eventually working his way up to art director.

He also attempted to start up his own game company, but a severe lack of business sense caused the whole thing to blow up in his face.
