Barry Knight (referee)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Barry Knight is an English football referee, and comes from Orpington in Kent.[1] He was born on 7 May 1960, and took up the whistle in 1978.[2] In 1991 he became a Southern League referee.
In 1995 he was promoted to the list of referees for the Football League.[3]
He was included on the FA Premier League list of referees from 1999. His first appointment in this competition was the game between Wimbledon and Middlesbrough on 10 August 1999 at Selhurst Park - a 2-3 away win.[4]
In the year 2001, he took charge of the FA Youth Cup Final, a 6-3 win for Arsenal against Blackburn.[5]
He was the referee who sent off team-mates Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer, of Newcastle United, after they fought during a match against Aston Villa at St. James' Park, which they eventually lost 3-0.[6][7]
His contribution to Premiership officiating stopped suddenly after Blackburn's 2-1 home win over Birmingham on 22 October 2005, and from February to August, 2006, he officiated only in the FA Football Conference South. This was due to a knee ligament injury he had suffered, and which took much time to recover from.[8][9]
