Barrackville, West Virginia

Barrackville is a town in Marion County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,288 at the 2000 census. Barrackville was established in 1771, named in honor of an early settler, John Barrack. It was incorporated January 25, 1968.

Barrackville is located at 39°30′10″N, 80°10′11″W (39.502741, -80.169713)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,288 people, 534 households, and 373 families residing in the town. The population density was 720.7/km² (1,863.0/mi²). There were 587 housing units at an average density of 328.5/km² (849.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 95.03% White, 3.88% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.08% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.54% of the population.

There were 534 households out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.4% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% were non-families. 26.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.90.

In the town the population was spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $31,587, and the median income for a family was $42,969. Males had a median income of $26,354 versus $21,786 for females. The per capita income for the town was $16,506. About 8.2% of families and 10.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.4% of those under age 18 and 5.6% of those age 65 or over.
