Barooga is a border town in the Riverina region of New South Wales, situated just north of the Murray River which forms the border with Victoria. It is located in the Berrigan Shire Council Local Government Area. At the 2001 census, Barooga had a population of 1,025.[2]

Barooga is a mainly residential area and most of its commercial and industrial needs are met in its twin town of Cobram, located on the other side of the Murray River.

[edit] Attractions

Being only three hours drive from Melbourne, Barooga is a popular holiday destination because it offers two registered clubs, a 36-hole golf course and river attractions.

[edit] Education

Barooga Public School caters for primary school students only. High School students must cross the river to Cobram. The school follows Victorian, rather than New South Wales school holidays.

[edit] Postcode

Unusually for a town in New South Wales, Barooga more probably because of its small size rather than its twin town linkage with Cobram has the postcode 3644, that is a postcode beginning with "3", which ordinarily signifies a location in Victoria. Other twin towns such as Albury and Wondonga, Euston and Robinvale, and Barham and Koondrook do not share postcodes.
