Baron Wolman

Baron Wolman was the first chief photographer of Rolling Stone.

Wolman grew up in Columbus, Ohio, studied philosophy at Northwestern University in Chicago, learned German at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, and then did a tour with military intelligence in West Berlin.

In Berlin, Wolman sold his first photo essay for publication, a story about life behind the then-new Berlin Wall. From Germany he moved to California to continue his career as a photo journalist.

After meeting Jann Wenner, the founder of Rolling Stone, Wolman became the publication's first chief photographer and remained so for three years. These photos remain icons of the late-60s rock music scene.

In 1970, Wolman left Rolling Stone to start his own magazine, Rags, a fashion magazine that folded after 13 issues. In 1974, he founded Squarebooks Publishing, a Santa Rosa-based publisher that specializes in illustrated books and wine calendars. Meanwhile, he developed an interest in aerial photography and some of his resulting photographs ended up in California From The Air: The Golden Coast and The Holy Land: Israel From The Air.

By August 2001, Wolman had moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico to set up shop in its art scene.
