The title Baron Chedworth of Chedworth, co. Gloucester, was created on 12 May 1741 for John Howe who had been a Member of Parliament for Wiltshire from 1730 to 1741 and was a son of John Howe, a former Paymaster of the Forces. Upon the death of the first baron less than a year later, it passed to his eldest son, John and then to his younger son Henry, in 1762. Upon the death of the third baron in 1781, the title passed to his nephew, John and became extinct upon his death in 1804.
