[edit] Schools

Barnby Dun has had elementary education since around 1872. The old school, as it is known now, with one classroom was paid for originally from local charities & the church fund. The property lies on High Street, Barnby Dun. The first headteacher of the new school was Charles Newbound 1872-1895. During the last century extensions & additions to the school were made. As the village grew, so did the school but in 1977 a new infant school was built on Church Road & the original school became a junior school educating 7-12 year old boys & girls. Unfortunately, due to a falling population it was decided that both schools be amalgamated & the infant school site was chosen as the new Primary school. The decision by Doncaster council was controversial and caused divisions in the village, which still last today. A split arose with both schools taking a different stance & the junior school parents, children & teacher's formed a protest group in a bid to have the decision changed. The junior school site was in fact larger & the building could have been extended outward and upwards. There was a suggestion of political bias, (This was just before the Donnygate scandal) & wrong doings by the then headteacher, governors & some Doncaster councillors who were in favour of their own (Infant) school being chosen. This has never been proven but the accusations & rumours still rumble on.
