The Barlow RC High School & Specialist Science College is a well-known educational institute, located in the south of Manchester. Dedicated to Saint Ambrose a local catholic martyr and saint, the school was established in 1985 after the merging of the Hollies RC High School for Girls and St Marks RC High School for Boys. The school is situated in Didsbury, a prosperous suburb of Manchester. The school has also regularly performed well in OFSTED inspections and tests in which their pupils expectate to take. The school also features a library.

[edit] Feeder Primary Schools

The Barlow RC High admits children from the LEA (Local Education Authority) district. This district consists of five schools, most of whom apply for a place at the school. The 5 schools are:

  • St Ambrose's
  • St Bernard's
  • St Catherine's
  • St Cuthbert's
  • St Kentigern's

[edit] Tests

According to Government legislation, the school has to mandatorily present children with tests at the following ages:

  • 13-14
  • 15-16.

The tests which are given at 13-14 are formally known as SATS (Standard Attainment Tests), the other tests which are given later on in Adolescence are known as GCSE's (General Certificate Of Secondary Education).

[edit] Pupils

The school has a quite a large number of pupils, estimated at 1000. For a school that was designed in the early 50's for a small minority, the school manages quite well. But the internal corridors and some classrooms, are overcrowded. But this could also be due to the fact that the school is annually over sub-scribed.

[edit] Special Requirements

There is a centre for children with minor/average/severe disabilties which is open during school hours. The 'AB' Centre as it's known is an acronym for Ambrose Barlow the Patron Saint of the school. The centre has a number of staff employed there, for the well-being and educational requirements that are needed by the pupils who visit there.

[edit] Future

A letter addressed to the whole school announced new plans that would enable Barlow to expand into new premises in (an estimated) 2012, after construction starts in 2011. The new school would comprise of many more rooms than the current building has the capacity of at the moment.

[edit] School Controversy

It is thought that the local newspaper, the South Manchester Reporter, exclaims false and unsubstantiated claims against the school on purpose. Any incident which occurs in the surrounding area by school children is thought to be the work of Barlow pupils, although this is false, it is still published. Also, Barlow's name always seems to be confused with Saint Ambrose Barlow High School which is also in Manchester, when mentioned in any media source.
