[edit] History
The constituency was created under the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885, and returned Conservative Party MPs at every general election until its abolution. However, it was briefly represented by the Liberal Joseph Andrews, who won the seat a by-election in October 1905 after the death of its first MP, Sir Robert Gunter. The Conservatives regained the seat at the general election in January 1906.
At the 1983 general election, Barkston Ash was replaced by the Selby constituency. At the Next UK general election (due no later than 2010), the modern equivalent of Barkston Ash will be Selby and Ainsty.
