[edit] Geography and administration
The parish of Bardsley lay within the administrative county of Lancashire and was formed in 1894 from an area of the Ashton-under-Lyne township. It was included in the Ashton-under-Lyne Poor Law Union. In 1951 part of Bardsley was added to Oldham Borough. In 1954 Bardsley parish was dissolved and its area divided between Ashton-under-Lyne County Borough (itself now part of Tameside), Oldham County Borough and Failsworth Urban District (both now Metropolitan Borough of Oldham).
[edit] History
The place name itself is derived from the Anglo-Saxon given name "Beornraƫd" plus the Anglo-Saxon word "leah" which means wood clearing, therefore meaning "a woodland clearing of a man called Beornraƫd".
