Previously placed as subfamily of Nimravidae, barbourofelinae has been recently assigned to its own distinct family Barbourofelidae, which is now thought to be taxonomically more closely related to Felidae than to Nimravidae.
Barbourofelidae is Miocene taxa appearing first in the fossil record in early miocene of Africa (Afrosmilus,Syrtosmilus,Ginsburgsmilus). By the end of early miocene land bridge opened between Africa and Eurasia allowing faunal exchange between the two continent. Barbourofelids migrated to Eurasia and reaching North America by the late Miocene represented there by genus Barbourofelis.
