Barbil is a town and a municipality in the Keonjhar district of the state of Orissa, India.
The region around Barbil has the fifth largest deposit of iron ore and manganese ore in the world. It is a major source of revenue generation for both the central and the state government.The residents of Barbil unfortunately do not get any benefits out of the revenue generated.The basic infrastructure particularly the roads and public health are non-existent and the state government has made no attempts to improve this.The nearest available fire tender is in Champua about 50 kms away,and will therefore take an average of four hours to arrive in case of a fire.The politicians of the region have made no attempts to improve the basic infrstructure and the benefits do not flow to common people at all. Barbil has a cosmopolitan culture due to the influx of people from almost all states of India and boast of a very good convent school by the name 'St. Mary's School'.

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Barbil had a population of 52,586.Now at 2006 people residing at barbil make a total of over 1.2 lakhs . most of them being non permanent businessmen. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Barbil has an average literacy rate of 64%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 69% of the males and 59% of females literate. 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.

There are 24 primary schools in this small city. 7 high schools offering certificate in english, hindi, oriya and bengali. For higher education there is Barbil college and mining school.

Barbil is an industrialised town with a number of plants, crushers and mines around. This place is very rich in iron ore other minerals found are manganese ore. The latest demand is for Iron Ore Fines which are being exported to China. Steel is manufactured and liquid oxygen is also produced here.in this area a large number of industry grown up. Pig Iron and Spun Pipes are maufactured at Kalinga Iron Works, (A State Govt Undertaking under Idicol).It remains to seen how the new government directive increasing the cost of export of raw iron ore affects the economy of Barbil town.
