The big families of Baraut Baraut has had two big families one that of Late S/Shri Gangaram Kishorilal Jain and the other of Late Shri Hardyan Singh Jain.

The Gangaram family started the seat of education in the Western Provinces --the DJ college or Digamber Jain College in Baraut on its own land in 1904.

They also built a hostel and quarters for the faculty on their own land. The descendants of this family were the four brothers late S/Shri Padam Chand Jain(Children--late Sukhbir Singh,Late Raghubir Singh,Prem,Sharda), Jiya Lal Jain(died early(?)(Children-late Savitri,Trishla,Bama),Dr. Moti Lal Jain(children-Smt.Darshan,Dr.Ashok(London),Rahul) and Jambu Prasad Jain(children-Satish,Kusum,Naresh,Late Dr.Ramesh,CMO,DMC(shot and died later during treatment),Sudha,Madhu).

They had an old house to the north of the Bada Jain temple and a new one built in 1938 between the Bada Jain temple and the Chhota Jain temple.Others are in Gangaram Kishorilal estate

They had a big Ganga Ram Kishorilal estate in the area surrounding the Digambar Jain College. They had lot of agricultural land in the area beyond the present Tehsil office. They ran a flour mill, a saw mill an oil expeller (Ganga Oil Mills) and pipe mill.

Over a period of time they closed all these and divided and partitioned the land and property and sold off their estates.

The new house came in the hands of the youngest brother Shri Jambu Prasad Jain(now with Shri Satish) and the other half in the name of widow of Late shri Jiya lal Jain(already sold to someone else).

The eldest Shri Padam Chand Jain moved to a small house in front and then moved to Muzaffarnagar to stay with his younger son late Shri R.S.jain.

Dr.Motilal Jain moved to a house in Gangaram buildings on Bhagwan Mahahvir Marg(Railway road) opposite to a house of LalaPadam Chand Jain(now owned by Shri Sukhbir Singh Jain/Kamla Devi Jain ).

The eldest son of late lala Padamchand Jain, who did not stay in Baraut during his long service of 38 years, was the renowned agricultural scientist (Plant Pathologist and Mycologist) Shri S.S.Jain (Sukhbir Singh Jain--children-Late Dr.Usha Jain ,Rashmi, Rakesh, Sangeeta) who initially worked in various places in UP agriculture department including Shahjahanpur,Basti and Kanpur and then in HP at Simla and Solan and finally as Senior Scientist in Central Rice Research Institute(under the ICAR) at Cuttack, Orissa from where he retired in 1978 and came to Meerut in 1980.

He is credited with the first ever successful research experiments in growing edible mushrooms at his laboratory in Solan. He was also the creator(Officer on special duty) of the HP agricultural University at its first office and campus at Solan.

He returned to Baraut in 1984-85 after his retirement in 1978 after serving for about 38 years. He was the founder President and later Patron of Jain Milan East Shastri Nagar Meerut. He earned name and fame as a social worker being the President of the Rotary Club of Baraut. He won many Rotary outstanding worker awards. He is credited with getting the district administration to clean up the drainage canal which was full of garbage after inviting the DM for a Rotary function.

Problems of Baraut Baraut is like any other small town in UP full of many temples and other places of worship but surrounded everywhere with garbage, sewage, stench, waste, dust, mosquitos, flies, monkeys, pigs and other animals, potholed broken paths/roads, unhygienic conditions, various problems-electricity-power cuts, erratic water supply, stolen or broken telephone, electricity wires, intimidations, assaults, thefts, burglary, kidnapping for ransom, law & order,booth-capturing security etc.

In rented buildings and premises an illegal practice is rampant--the tenants quietly handover the premises to others after taking money, also called 'pugree'much to the loss of the owners. The amounts run in to lakhs. The small shopkeepers are also making a huge amount of money by paying almost negligible rents for shops ,premises taken on very low rents e.g. Rs.10/per month long back.

There is the office of the SDM(under the DM Baghpat and Commissioner Meerut Division),Tehsil,Police CO(Under the SP Baghpat/DIG/IG Meerut),Municipality,BDO,SDO Telephones,Electricity supply,Supdt. Central Excise etc.

The monkeys are a big problem. But the devotees of Mahavir Hanumanji offer them food and prayers. It is learnt that monkeys will be caught and released in a sanctuary(whether environmental experts will consider it a proper place is not known) in the jungles near Hastinapur.Hastinapur is a pilgrimage centre for the Jains. It is learnt that monkeys already released there are creating lot of problems for the Jain pilgrims(non-violent ahimsa wadis) and there is fear of being bitten and contracting rabies. Why not have the sanctuary far away from the pilgrim centre?

Lack of proper Health and Medical care There are no good or specialty hospitals.

People are referred mostly to Delhi, occasionally to Meerut.

There are only a few good doctors e.g. Dr.Anil Kumar Jain,Dr.Bansal,Dr.Pradip,Dr.Pande,Dr.Tomar, Dr. Sharma. Dr.Mittal of Mittal Nursing Home left after being beaten up badly. Dr.Rajesh Chaudhury was murdered. There are a very few nursing homes but not trained nurses, mostly male nurses.

Delhi and Meerut(UP)are two-three hours away. Roads are very bumpy. Many people have lost their lives due to lack of proper medical care facilities in Baraut and surrounding areas(e.g. Shri S.S.Jain(Agrl. Scientist,Dr.Usha Jain(Psychologist),Mrs.Johar(Principal of a girls College) etc.

Mainly commercial town The town gets a flow of people from the surrounding villages right from morning for their buying and selling needs.

Predominantly agricultural area

Villages have agriculture as their mainstay.

Area is fertile being close to the river Yamuna/Jamuna. Main crops appear to be wheat, sugarcane and mustard.

In fruits mangoes and guavas are grown. Grapes too but not so sweet.

Watermelons, muskmelons and 'kakri'make their appearance during summers.

Industry Rim and dhura and agricultural implements are the small scale industries and few sugar mills and khandsari units abound.

Schools Manyschools have come up which satisfy the desire of the parents/relatives to see their children ape the Public School dress and the conventschool dress. The schools are a good business.

Problems in development The town of Baraut is only about 50-60 kms from Delhi. It is in the NCR.But its development is very bad as compared to that of the capital-Delhi. While all roads leading out of Delhi have developed, the road leading from Delhi to Baraut is not. There is a vast mushrooming of houses and colonies in the area between Loni and the Yamuna river(earlier a water, flood- affected swampy area of the Yamuna/Jamuna river). UP government has developed a well planned township the Tronica city, where growth is seen recently. After this there was hardly any growth. The main reason being that the area is bordering the river Yamuna where there are many places for the thugs, bandits and looters to hide. There are fields and groves of trees and bhattas where also the criminals could hide(More details can be had from the concerned Thanas. The roads in this area have become notorious for looting in the night and other crimes.Drivers are afraid to venture on the Delhi -Baraut road after dark. Of late due to reports of sanction of six laning between Delhi and Baraut or maybe upto Baghpat the land prices have shot up and there is buying spree of land. One can see boundary walls with gates coming up around plots of land puchased by various people as a sort of investment to cash in on appreciation and other commericial activity expected, once the six laning is started . (please confirm the truth from authoritative souces) It is also heard that an outer ring road is also coming up between Sonepat(Haryana and somewhere between Baghpat and Khekra, going to connect Faridabad and all around Delhi(NCR-National Capital Region) There is an official site for Baraut http://bagpat.nic.in/about_baraut.htm
