Main article: Synod of Baccanceld

In 694 it was the site of the Synod of Baccanceld. This meeting was rather a witenagemot, or Anglosaxon Parliament or Royal Council (in Christian kingdoms often including clerics), than an ecclesiastical synod, as it was presided over by Wihtred, King of Kent. There were present at its deliberations Brihtwald, Archbishop of Canterbury, Tobias, Bishop of Rochester, besides abbots, abbesses, priests, deacons and lay lords.[1]
