Banu Ukhaidhir

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Banu Ukhaidhir (Arabic: بنو الأخيضر‎) established a kingdom in Al-Yamamah (central Arabia) in 866 C.E.. They were descendents of Muhammad through his daughter Fatimah and his grandson Al-Hassan, and at least one contemporary traveller [1] describes them as having been Shi'ites of the Zaydi persuasion. Their capital was known as Al-Khidhrimah, which lay near the present-day city of Al-Kharj in Saudi Arabia. Their rule lasted until some time in the mid-11th century, when the powerful Qarmatians of neighboring Al-Hasa swept them away as part of their conquest of the Arabian Peninsula. Out of the several Alid families that reside in Nejd, Saudi Arabia today, only one still traces its lineage to Banu Ukhaidhir.
