[edit] Foundation
It was established in 1976 with a few researchers and intellectuals of Bangladesh. From the period of its establishment, it has emerged as the largest association of intellectuals and researchers in Bangladesh. The founder president of the society was the late Major General M. R. Choudhury. He died on June 24, 1999. WHO, mentioned in their obituary message: "The AIDS and human rights community in Bangladesh has lost its founder and a great leader. General was a great soldier in this battle and fought until the very end, as a soldier should do." Now the association is preside by Prof. Dr. S. I. Khan (Vice-chancellor of Jagannath University, Bangladesh).
[edit] Establishment of Department of Microbiology
An early and eminent member of the society, Late Prof. Anwarul Azim Choudhury has established a full-fledged Department of Microbiology in University of Dhaka at 1979. Till now about 100 microbiologists have obtained PhD degree from this department. Although Professor Chowdury struggled almost single handedly for creation of the Department of Microbiology, it is obvious that it would have been impossible to have a functional Department without the self-less dedication of scientists and teachers working in the field of Microbiology in Bangladesh. We are indebted to them. They are the pioneers who established the science of Microbiology in Bangladesh.
