Banbury Castle

Banbury Castle stood near the centre of the town of Banbury, Oxfordshire (grid reference SP454404).

It was built in 1135 by Alexander, Bishop of Lincoln as a domestic rather than a military building. During the reign of King John in 1201-7 it was strengthened and in the 13th-14th century it was remodelled into a concentric plan. During the Civil War it was beseiged twice and soon after that it was demolished in 1648. Stones from it were used to build houses in the town.
