[edit] balinese language

The Balinese language should be mentioned.

[edit] looking at the map

By looking at the map I can not really find the location of the island of Bali.

[edit] terrorism

Wasn't there a major terrorist attack at a tourist site? Should that have its own article with link to it from here?
Was Bali hit by the Tsunami December 2004?

AlMac|(talk) 00:15, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

no bali was not hit by the Tsunami --84.9.63.136 17:27, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

See 2002 Bali bombing for the bombing in Kuta, Bali. The island was unaffected by the 2004 tsunami; it's perhaps 2000 km east of Aceh, which was hardest-hit, and is well protected by Sumatra and Java. CDC (talk) 02:02, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

I've moved some images to relevant sections, moved the beach image here, and moved the commented-out Bali rice terraces and Rice terraces at entrance to Gunung Kawi Temple here to declutter the article. References for captions are [1] and [2] -Wikibob 03:40, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] "Balinese bow"

In a play I'm in, it says that one of the characters does a "Balinese bow" to the audience's applause. Does anyone know if this is something specific, or just a general flouncy bow?

A Balinese bow would most likely be bent at the waist with both arms stretched out to one side of the torso and the most important jesture is with the hands. The thumb is pressed back onto the palm, and fingers are outstretched and bent back as much as possible. Think of an Hindu mudra pose using fingers arched back towards your wrist.

[edit] History, beaches and arts

I've removed the sentences about the fame of Bali's beaches and its artistic traditions from the History section. As they stood, they had no relevance to history. -Pgan002 04:43, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] legong keraton?

the picture of balinese dancers in this article is mislabled as legong keraton. The costumes are more in the style of Tari Belibes or perhaps even Chendrawasih?

Recently I was involved in a number of long conversations with an Indian scholar holidaying in Bali. He came from the Orissa region of Indian, previously known as Kalinga.

He explained that Asoka the Great, an ancient Indian King, had conquered Kalinga then, following that, pushed forward into what in now Thailand, then into Sumatra, Java and Bali.

The name Bali, my Indian friend explained, is derived from the names of the towns in Kalinga (Orissa). Here is the list of such:
