As of 2001 India census^[2], Balurghat had a population of 135,516. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Balurghat has an average literacy rate of 79.2%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 82.5% of the males and 75.7% of females literate. 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.
