Baltar is a Portuguese parish of the municipality of Paredes. It is 7.70 km² in area, with 4,666 inhabitants as of 2001.

The etymological origin of the word "Baltar" is explained differently by different authors. Pinho Leal writes that it is a combination of the Celtic words balt (water) and aar (running). According to Dr. Pedro Ferreira, Baltar is derived from "Walter", a germanic name with a few equivalents in Portuguese. According to Arqueólogo Português, Baltar was a documented geographic name in the year 1087.
