Balsas is a city in the state of state of Maranhão, Brazil. It gives its name to the Balsas Region.

GEOGRAPHICAL AND DEMOGRAPHIC SITUATION The municipal district of Balsas is located in the microrregion of the General of Balsas to the south of the State of Maranhão. It has a distance of 800 Km of the Capital of the State, São Luís. The geographical coordinates of the healthy municipal district: Area of 13.141,64 Km² with altitude of 247 m. It is the 3rd municipal district in territorial greatness of the State. The limits of the municipal district are determined like this: To the North: with the municipal district of Fortaleza of the Walnuts and São Raimundo das Mangabeiras. To the South: with the municipal district of Alto Parnaíba, Sambaíba and the State of Tocantins. To the East: with the municipal districts of Alto Parnaíba, Sambaíba and Tasso Fragoso. To the West: with the municipal district of Riachão and the State of Tocantins.
