Balmerino was a champion New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse, foaled in 1972. He was Horse of the Year in 1976, and was top of the Free Handicap for Australia and New Zealand in 1975/1976. He raced 47 times for 22 wins and 13 placings. He won the New Zealand Derby and was second in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
