Ballston, New York

Ballston is a town in Saratoga County, New York, USA. The population was 8,729 at the 2000 census. The name is derived from an early settler, Eliphalet Ball.

The Town of Ballston is in the south part of the County.

The region was first settled around 1763. The area was originally called "Ball's Town" and "Ballton." The town was formed in 1785 while still in Albany County. The original owner of the town was the Mcdonald brothers. A man named Eliphalet Ball bought the area of land from them and called it Ball's Town. It stayed that way but over time it got shortened to Ballston.

Part of the south town line is the border of Schenectady County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 77.7 km² (30.0 mi²). 76.7 km² (29.6 mi²) of it is land and 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it (1.33%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 8,729 people, 3,243 households, and 2,425 families residing in the town. The population density was 113.8/km² (294.8/mi²). There were 3,388 housing units at an average density of 44.2/km² (114.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.49% White, 0.52% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.33% of the population.

There were 3,243 households out of which 36.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.6% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the town the population was spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $54,845, and the median income for a family was $61,709. Males had a median income of $44,365 versus $30,918 for females. The per capita income for the town was $24,206. About 3.1% of families and 4.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.4% of those under age 18 and 5.9% of those age 65 or over.
