Baku Slavic University

Baku Slavic University (BSU) (Azerbaijani: Bakı Slavyan Universiteti), sometimes referred to as Baku Slav University, is a public university located in Baku, Azerbaijan.

BSU's history is tied to Azerbaijan's at times tenuous history with Russia. Originally called the Institute of Russian Language and Literature, the school was founded in 1946 at the direction of the Soviet Council of Peoples' Commissars as a pedagogical school for training Russian-language teachers. During Azerbaijan's time in the USSR, Russian was considered a more respected language and in Azerbaijan SSR there were both Russian- and Azeri-track schools. When Azerbaijan gained its independence, it quickly moved to restore the Azeri language to its previous dominance. As a result of this change in political climate, in 2000 the school's name was changed to its present and mission expanded to teach Slavic languages rather than just Russian.
