Bajtra
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bajtra is a popular liqueur from the island of Malta which is made from the prickly pear that grows widely in the Maltese islands.
The Bajtra brand liqueur is owned and marketed in Malta and other countries by M.DeMajo Wines & Spirits Ltd. and is distilled from a blend of the prickly pear fruit, honey and herbs. The resultant rose colored distillate makes an excellent after dinner drink on its own and also mixes well with orange juice, bitter lemon or champagne.
Bajtra's formulation has been handed down through the generations of the DeMajo family, whose ancestor Don Giuseppe DeMajo arrived in Malta in 1730 as a knight of the Sovereign Military Order of St. John. Don Giuseppe DeMajo lies buried in St. John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta, where his tombstone can be seen to this very day.
Bajtra has become a popular purchase for tourists who see it as an ideal souvenir of their stay in Malta. The liqueur has also been exported to such markets as Europe, Asia and the Americas.
